fair roller coasterThe Fiestas de Octubre (October Celebrations) of Jalisco and Guadalajara have begun, as of today, the last day of September. Of what do we speak, you may ask? Every year, Mexican towns, cities, municipalities, what-have-you hosts an annual celebration for itself, its citizens and any would-be visitors. The end result in our city is a massive fair with rides and street food and a whole lot more, such as celebrity performances including the acknowledgement of a beauty queen and enjoyment of famous musical acts. Once again, Guadalajara is prepped for the experience, as best as it can be. If you’re currently in the city and you want to replicate a US state fair and then some, but in a completely different country, culture and manner, then look no further than the Fiestas de Octubre.

Tlaquepaque Is the Place to Be for Día De Muertos

Already underway as of yesterday, Tlaquepaque’s festival in honor of Día de Muertos, the 5th Festival de Muertos, promises to be something not to be missed, if you’re in the area. Most of the activities really began today in earnest, and the festival will encompass the entirety of the celebration, through the 2nd of November. You can expect to find related art, processions, performances and more over the next few days at a variety of locations, including Tlaquepaque’s commercial center Forum Tlaquepaque [map], the municipality’s Jardín Hidalgo [map], and right smack in the streets. Another weekend is upon us and with it comes what promises to be a very worthwhile and enjoyable eco-expo hosted by the Feria de Productores (Fair of Producers). This green organization here in Guadalajara aims to provide organic and artesanal foodstuffs utilizing fair and just business practices. With that mission in mind, it is putting on another rather large expo with many local producers in attendance this Sunday, April 19th, from 10am-5pm. Among the items available for purchase will be organic, pesticide-free vegetables and fruits, aretesanal ice cream, prepared foods, personal care products, things for your pet, and much more. If locally-sourced and organic goods are your thing, or if you want to support environmentally-responsible vendors, be sure to visit this eco-expo at the Tepeyac Casino residential development in Zapopan for the low cost of $15 MXN per adult/$10 MXN per child. There will be music, workshops, art, and childrens’ activities for the whole family’s entertainment. We’ll see you there!

The 2014 International Book Fair in Guadalajara, Mexico, is Underway

fig-514908The annual International Book Fair of Guadalajara (La Feria Internacional del Libro de Guadalajara), Mexico, is currently in full swing. Started by the University of Guadalajara some 28 years ago, it has been billed as the most important gathering of writing professionals in all of Ibero-America. While the fair is put on for those professionals from all over the world to conduct business and hold academic conferences, the event is also a cultural one and the public is invited to attend on specific days and times (see below). Activities open to the public during the festival’s nine days include hearing your favorite authors speak, attending free musical performances, and film viewings, among other things.

Free Musical Performances in Guadalajara, Mexico, this Weekend: The 212 RMX 2014 Festival

IMG_0171One of the truly wonderful things about the city of Guadalajara, Mexico, is the number of performances free to the public that take place in various parts of the city. Just wrapping up is the Epicentro, Festival de Inovación, a several-day festival dedicated to espousing the benefits of social and technological innovation. Along with conferences, there are free performances throughout the city during the festival, including live music smack in Avenida Chapultepec from bands like Technicolor Fabrics. Today is the last day of that festival, but hot on its heels is the 212 RMX music festival that is put on by last.fm every year. For much of the day and night tomorrow, Saturday, November 22nd, bands will be strumming their stuff on five different stages. On tap are Nortec Collective, Telefunka, Torreblanca, Salón Acapulco, and Elis Paprika and the Black Pilgrims, among many others (there are 38 acts planned in total).
